-Day 1-
We are so excited about this second session of senior high camp! We have a great group of campers and they are already having a blast here. As soon as all of our campers arrived this afternoon, they began working on names and chants for their republics. We held a short all-camp meeting down at the amphitheater before the rain and wind forced us to move indoors. While it was raining cats and dogs outside, campers got short previews of their specialty classes with their instructors indoors.
After a delicious dinner, we were led in praise and worship by an awesome group from Greenville College. Our camp pastor, Chan Sheppard, spoke to all of us afterwards, encouraging the students to accept each other and embrace the experience they will have here this week. Afterwards, each republic got a chance to reflect together on tonight’s message and prepare for the next event on the schedule: the group competition. In honor of the 2012 summer Olympics, our group competitions include “track events” and a “decathlon.” It is great to see our campers already working together, bonding with each other, and having a great time!

-Day 2-
It’s been an awesome day here at Barefoot Republic Camp! We started the morning off with breakfast and some morning praise and worship. Next, campers met together with their counselors for family devotional time. This is a special time for republics to get to know each other and dig deeper in the Word. Specialty classes went for the full hour and 45 minutes today, allowing campers to really get a feel for the classes they signed up for. It will be awesome to see how the campers grow and learn through these different specialties this week! This afternoon, all six republics headed down to the low ropes course for team building.
Everyone had to learn to trust each other in order to complete challenges like “the wall,” “the spiderweb,” and the “trust fall.” During free time, campers had several different options to choose from, including paintball, visual arts, basketball, and volleyball. After dinner, everyone headed down to the amphitheater for evening program. The Greenville College worship team led us in some great worship songs and then Pastor Chan Sheppard spoke on God’s acceptance and forgiveness. Our last event of the evening was an Olympic themed group competition: rhythmic gymnastics. Each republic did a wonderful, creative job given the time and resources they were given! Right now, the evening is being capped off with a celebratory dance party in the D.C. We are looking forward to what tomorrow will hold!

What made you come back to Barefoot this year?
“It’s fun… just meeting people and playing paintball.”

“Probably just meeting people. It’s fun… and funny. Everyone gets along well. I’ve met a lot of new friends. Charles… he’s from Nashville. He’s one of my best friends here.”
What do you learn at Barefoot?
“I learn how to become a better man in life and be a Christian.”
What are you most excited about?
“Braveheart…because I get to peg people with food!”
Hannah | Age 14 | Franklin, TN
What made you come back to Barefoot this year?
“I had a lot of fun last year. It’s not like the other camps I went to. I went to a camp that was similar to this one but it wasn’t as fun. Being together…you get to know your friends a lot more. You do a lot more stuff together, so you’re like more of a family than just friends.”
What do you learn at Barefoot?
“I just learned a lot more about God and how to praise Him.”
What has been your favorite moment from the week so far?
“I like the messy games but I also like having together time with my group and knowing what they have to say- knowing their story. That’s always really cool.”
Will | Age 15 | Franklin, TN
What made you come back this year?
“I just love the atmosphere and the nature and everything. The cabins are really cool. I love just coming back to see my friends, like Liam and Shawn.”
What have you learned at Barefoot?
“I’ve learned that no matter how tough things get…if you’re put down, God will always pull you back up.”
What has been your favorite moment from this week?
“Probably the watermelon. It’s a long story…We were sitting down outside during the relays and at the end, Candace says ‘We’re gonna have some watermelon’ …and Austin, who I thought would never be the person to say this, goes ‘Watermelon!!’ (in a really funny voice). So now that’s the catchphrase for our cabin.”
What are you looking forward to this week?
“Making of the band and seeing how it all comes together on Friday.”
Kyoshoa | Age 17 | Nashville, TN
What made you come back to Barefoot this year?
“I really love Barefoot. I love all the people I get to come back and see. They love on me and I love on them…and I get to meet new friends.”
What do you learn at Barefoot?
“I learned that God loves you and He will never stop loving you until the day you die.”
What has been your favorite moment this week?
“The messy games, meeting new people, singing, and dancing.”
What are you looking forward to this week?
“Seeing what God’s gonna do in my life.”
Why is diversity important here at Barefoot?
“So you won’t judge one another and people can just come as one.”
Andres | Colombia | Counselor
What makes you come back to Barefoot every year?
“Knowing that God is going to use this week to change kids’ lives for eternity.”
What is the most unique thing about Barefoot?
“The diversity is very unique. Just seeing how people blend in no matter what differences they may have…”
What are you hoping the campers walk away with after this week?
“The love of Jesus.”
What has been your favorite moment this week?
“The competitions and team building. To see them bond and blend in so seamlessly… we don’t have anyone in our cabin that’s fighting or hating each other. They’re all bonding and becoming brothers.”
Marian | Houston, TX | Republic Leader
What has been your favorite moment from this week so far?
“Whenever all the girls get there and they don’t know each other- they start making up the chants and name for the cabin and then ideas start flying and then BAM, we got a name for our cabin and all the girls have bonded. It’s fun to hear their different ideas.”
What is unique about Barefoot?
“Aside from the diversity, all the awesome different subjects the kids can choose from… like sports and a lot of arts and a lot of cool exposure to different things that maybe they have never thought of trying before. I like that a lot- that kids can not only get out of their comfort zone with each other but explore their own new talents.”
What do you hope your girls get out of this week?
“I hope they can walk away trusting each other. I know that through the low ropes course they have already experienced how to trust and team build. Trust, to me, is also a big thing as I have been growing into a young adult- that I learn how to trust people. I think it’s important that these girls start learning it now so that when they become young ladies they have that established in their lives.”
-Day 3-
Happy 4th of July! It has been an awesome third day of camp here at Barefoot. The campers are becoming like family and really enjoying their time here. After family devotionals and specialty I today, campers participated in some team building activities: monsoon volleyball, angle ball, and crab apple whiffle ball. After lunch, each republic got a chance to practice for the republic showcase tomorrow night. Their goal is to come up with a skit, song, or dance that best exemplifies this summer’s theme: Reflections. We are excited to see what they have created!
During free time, campers chose from activities including archery, making of the band, slip n’ slide, and more. After dinner everyone put on their red, white, and blue in preparation for our group competition, “Capture the American Flag.” After the game was won and everyone was good and sweaty, we met together for evening program. After a fun stage game with Cheetos and whipped cream, we had praise and worship and heard Pastor Chan’s message. We ended this great day with a movie, sno-cones, popcorn, and a surprise fireworks show.

Why is diversity so important here at Barefoot?

Why do you think your republic will win the group competition this week?

What is special about Barefoot?
“I’ve seen the same people I saw last year and it made me happy because I thought I was gonna be by myself. It’s not a racial thing with God- He wants everybody to come together, have fun, and praise Him.”
Logan | Age 17 | Franklin, TN

Apiew | Age 16 | Ethiopia
What made you come back to camp this year?
“I wanted to experience it and get along with God again.”
What made you love Barefoot?
“The diversity, mostly. And the interactivity. You get out of your comfort zone- that’s the most fun thing.”
What has been your favorite moment from this week?
“I think it was Tuesday. The whole party thing was fun- you would see people that you wouldn’t really see and we were all getting along so well.”
What have you learned at Barefoot?
“I learned not to judge. Second, I learned that God still loves me even if I do make mistakes- which I make a lot of.”
Tell me about your republic:
“Cabin #6 is really fun. The counselors are amazing. We all get along. We like to dance and we have really awesome chants. I’m surprised that that many people would share things.”
Why do you think your republic will win the competition this week?
“I mean, we are the oldest cabin. Teamwork- we all believe in each other. I learned that communication is really important. If you have to say something, say it. Not gonna judge.”
Andrew | Brentwood, TN | Support Staff
What made you want to come back to Barefoot as staff after being a camper?
“I came back to Barefoot because I love it. I love the people and I love the unique experience I can get from no other place. It’s a good spiritual refresher. It’s just a place that I really enjoy.”
What has been one of your favorite moments from this week so far?
“My favorite moment from this week so far has been getting to know more of the staff, but also knowing the campers. It’s very different, but I like it.”
How has Barefoot changed your life?
“I feel like it’s made me a generally more accepting person of diversity. It’s spiritually helped me out and helped me grow.”
What are you hoping the campers walk away with this week?
“I hope they go back home as new, different, changed people. My favorite thing about working with kids is watching them change into better people.”
Ayriel | Antioch, TN | Counselor in Training
What made you want to come back and serve at Barefoot after being a camper for several years?
“Barefoot is definitely a life-changing camp. I’ve been going here for some years now- I want to say 6, 7 years. After being here for so long I’ve seen how so many people’s lives have been changed from it, so I wanted to be able to give back by being a counselor.”
What has been one of your favorite moments from the week so far?
“Definitely the reflection time after evening program and the family devos. Spending time with the girls and getting to know them because they open up so well- you get a chance to dig deep and see who they really are.”
How has Barefoot changed your life personally?
“Barefoot has shown me that you have to trust God first. It’s shown me that until you put Him first, nothing else is gonna work for you in your life.”
What do you hope your girls walk away with this week?
“I want my girls to know that God definitely loves them… not to worry about what others think but to love God first and then themselves- just to know that they’re beautiful in His eyes.”
-Day 4-
Students enjoyed praise and worship after breakfast this morning and spent their “10 minutes of silence” quietly reflecting by themselves. This gives the students an opportunity to pray, write in a journal, observe God’s creation, or just think. Campers continued participating in specialty classes today, many of them preparing for the student showcase on Saturday morning. This afternoon, one of our most highly anticipated events too place: IRON MAN! The sky was overcast and it threatened to rain but we pressed on anyway. Iron Man is a huge relay race consisting of volleyball, running, slip n’ slide, nasty food, dizzy bats, and more!
The first republic to finish each leg, build a pyramid with their whole group, and cross the soccer field to the finish line without unlinking arms was named the winner. Each republic put forth a strong effort and worked hard as a team. One of our campers led us in the national anthem and our victors were medaled. After a quesadilla dinner, everyone headed down to the amphitheater for evening program, where they will worship, play a stage game, and hear Pastor Chan speak on God’s Word. It is almost the end of day four, but we still have one major event to go after evening program! The republic showcase is a chance for each republic to demonstrate their ability to think creatively and work as a team. We are all excited to see how they perform!

-Camper + Staff Interviews-
David | Age 15 | Mexico
What do you think about Barefoot so far?
“I think it’s good. For me, being here- it gets me away from the neighborhood…from bad things. I don’t get distracted by those. My mind is…I don’t worry about that. This is the first time I’ve heard a lot about God. I don’t go to church that much, only three times a year. So, I like it.”
What did you think about the “right foot left foot line” team building activity we did today?
“It surprised me because some people you think might not go through the same things you do, but they do. People might look a certain way, and you may think that they don’t go through the things you go through, but you really never know. They’re going through things you’re going through. I think that was really cool.”
Hannah | Age 15 | Smyrna, TN
How has Barefoot gone for you so far?
“It’s been good. I really like it. I’ve done art and water sports. They’re really fun.”
Tell me about your republic:
“We work good as a team. I listen and help out. We have a lot of fun.”
What has been your favorite moment from the week so far?
“Going out on the lake and swimming.”
What are your leaders like?
“They’re really nice and funny…and good to talk to.”
What are you most excited about?
“The showcase tonight. We’re working really hard and we made it so funny.”
What did you think of the “right foot left foot line” activity today?
“It was pretty cool. It was nice to see that you’re not the only one going through struggles.”
Mukti | Age 15 | Nepal
What do you think about Barefoot so far?
“It’s good; we have fun. We play all kinds of sports and get to meet other people from other backgrounds and other places.”
How is your republic bonding together as a team?
“We are good; we work together as a team. We are working hard and we won two or three games.”
What have you learned about God this week?
“I learned that we should not judge by their color of skin or where they’re from or their background or any other stuff. We are all the same.”
What are you looking forward to?
“I’m excited to have more fun. I want to meet more people and learn a lot about them.”
Brie | Age 15 | Nashville, TN
What made you come back to camp this summer?
“The powerful feeling at camp and how much fun we have. It’s a freedom that you don’t have in regular society- to express yourself as who you are and what you like to do and who you like to hang out with.”
How has Barefoot changed your life?
“I’ve learned about forgiveness and more about the Lord…and what I can do to better myself and help others.”
What has been your favorite moment from the week so far?
“Horseback riding, definitely.”
How is your republic bonding?
“We have really good teamwork and we try our best to listen to each other. We all have different voices and different opinions but we try to make them all work together and put it into one idea.”
Luke | Franklin, TN | Counselor
What do you think about Barefoot so far?
“It’s definitely been quite an experience- I’ve learned a lot. It’s been a lot of fun getting to know these kids. It’s been a lot of fun seeing them come together, having them all be from different backgrounds and different races. I’ve learned a lot from them and they’ve learned a little bit from me, hopefully. It’s been a great experience overall.”
What has been one of your favorite moments from the week?
“One of my favorite moments from this week was probably two nights ago during the gymnastics competition. My guys really rallied around each other and worked together….and we won the gymnastics competition. Everyone was real pumped about that. I think one of the best parts of that was that everyone went right to sleep after that. That was pretty cool.”
What has God taught you through being on staff at Barefoot?
“One thing He’s taught me is how fortunate I am, growing up in the life I did. Today we did an exercise where we kind of got to find out everyone’s backgrounds. I was shocked to see how many of my kids had experienced so much discrimination and hard times growing up just because of who they were or where they lived. I consider myself fortunate to have grown up they way I did. It’s been awesome to learn from these guys and what they’ve been through.”
Why would you recommend Barefoot to others?
“I would recommend it because it puts staff and campers in a position that they usually wouldn’t be put into in the real world because for the most part you get to choose who you hang out with. Here you’re kind of grouped together with people you may have never met before and you get to learn about them through that grouping. You get to learn about your differences and you learn to celebrate your differences.”
Dricka | Nashville, TN | Support Staff and Basketball Instructor
What do you think about serving on staff at Barefoot?
“I really like it. We’re all one big family and it’s really diverse here. It’s a lot of fun.”
What has been one of your favorite moments from this week?
“I’d say getting to know all of the kids here. It’s been an awesome experience.”
What does God teach you through being on staff at Barefoot?
“He teaches me that we’re all one…together. We learn from each other. He’s just so great.”
Why would you recommend Barefoot?
“It’s a really good atmosphere- Christians coming together and we’re all learning about God.”
What do you hope the girls walk away with this week?
“I’d say learning more about God and being open to other people that don’t know Jesus- just to share His Word and learn more each day, continuing to read Scripture after they leave camp.”
-Day 5-
This week has flown by so quickly; it’s hard to imagine that the campers will be leaving us tomorrow! It has been a great last day of camp. This morning campers and staff put on their camp T-shirts for republic and group photos. Check these out on Barefoot’s Facebook page tomorrow! Specialty classes wrapped up today as they prepared for tomorrow’s showcase. Parents and siblings are encouraged to come and see how hard the campers have worked and how much they have learned tomorrow morning! During free time today, some of the staff and campers participated in the staff vs. campers basketball game, kids went to water sports, paintball was played, and much more.
This afternoon, our last big republic competition took place: BRAVEHEART.
Campers must work together as a republic in order to protect their counselors from flying flour, rice, tomato sauce, and leftovers from this week’s meals. The republics with the cleanest counselors at the end of 10 minutes won! The campers and counselors then got hosed off and headed to showers. After dinner, evening program commenced. Tonight’s evening program was a little different. At the end, campers were encouraged to write down their prayers to God- things they wanted to confess, place in His hands, or thank him for- on paper lanterns. Next, inspired by the movie Tangled, everyone headed out to the field behind the amphitheater to light them and watch them float towards heaven. Following the beautiful lantern ceremony, the campers were given an opportunity to give testimonies. God is really incredible- the amazing ways that He has worked in the lives of these kids this week was truly moving! To end this wonderful day, a huge bonfire and s’mores were enjoyed by everyone.

What do you like about each other?
David: “He’s pretty cool. He’s fun to talk to.”
Ory: “Same thing- he’s cool to talk to. He’s kind of been through the same stuff I’ve been through so it’s kind of interesting.”
What has been your favorite moment together this week?
Both: “Paintball.”
Why is diversity important?
Ory: “You want to be seeing different people and not just stuck with the same people all the time… just meeting new people and seeing what they’ve been going through before you start judging them.”
How are you going to try to maintain your friendship after camp?
David: “Probably talk to him on facebook.”
Ory: “Yeah stay on touch with him on facebook and get his phone number.”
Dreka | Age 17 | Nashville, TN
Allison | Age 16 | Nashville, TN
Dreka: “We weren’t all talking at first so I just started talking to Hannah from day 1.”
Allison: “She was really nice and I just wanted to talk to her, so I did.”
What do you like about each other?
Allison: “She’s crazy!”
Dreka: “She’s nice and she gets me laughing- we just be talking in the cabins, just laughing.”
What has been your favorite part of the week together?
Dreka: “I would say the praise and worship. It gets you in the mood and really tells you about God. The songs make you cry- God loves you just the way you are.”
Allison: “The praise and worship. It makes you feel closer to God.”
Preston | Age 16 | Illinois
Marley | Age 15 | Florida
Alex | Age 14 | Illinois
Marley: “We became friends being in the same cabin, doing the team building stuff…earning each other’s trust… becoming friends.”
Preston: “I didn’t really meet Marley on the first day but I started to get to know him on the second day.”
Alex: “We just started talking and I thought he was pretty cool.”
What makes the guy next to you a good friend?
Marley: “Everybody in our cabin is friends. There’s no person there that don’t like each other. Everybody in there are great friends because we get along, we make each other laugh- at nighttime we can’t go to sleep because we’re laughing.”
Alex: “We work really hard too.”
Preston: “I think Marley’s really cool. We both have second specialty soccer together. Alex I’ve known for about five years because we were both homeschooled. We’ve had fun.”
Alex: “Marley’s just cool, he likes everybody and gets along with everybody.”
What has been your favorite moment from the week together?
Preston: “Probably last night- the showcase.”
Marley: “Me and Shawn came up with a basic idea for it and then everybody added to it. We just made like a funny, wonderful idea that everybody got to participate in. It got us first place.”
Alex: “I liked the second day we were here, when we did the trust fall and stuff. That was fun… also the showcase. I’m usually a quiet person, but since I’ve been at camp I’ve gotten out of my comfort zone and I feel better about stuff.”
Savannah | Age 16 | Columbia, TN
Nymal | Age 14 | Franklin, Tennessee/Sudan
Namal: “I was in her cabin…”
Savannah: “We were doing those questions where we got to know each other. We just kind of started talking and hanging out.”
Namal: “And now we’ve been inseparable.”
What do you like about each other?
Namal: “She’s so nice and understanding.”
Savannah: “She’s super exciting and fun to be around. I feel like if I need to talk to somebody about something, I can talk to her. She’s so outgoing and fun.”
What’s been your favorite moment together?
Namal: “Capture the flag was fun… and paintball!”
Savannah: “Oh yeah. Definitely paintball. Worship was fun too because I felt like I could relate to her.”
What have you learned about teamwork this week?
Namal: “That it’s very hard to do stuff on your own. Some people are independent- I’m an independent person. I like to do things on my own and for myself, but sometimes you need to depend on other people to help you out. There’s no way you can do it by yourself. “
Savannah: “I think you need to just stay calm and work together as a team. A lot of people just go crazy and they don’t work together so nothing works out. It falls apart. If you’re calm and work together, everything usually works really well.”
Namal: “Communication, too. If you don’t say anything then no one will ever know what you want to do.”
How will you maintain this friendship once camp has ended?
Namal: “Well, we’re going to exchange numbers. Columbia and Franklin are pretty close, so we’re gonna hang out as much as possible.”
Savannah: “Yeah, because I come into Franklin all the time so we’ll probably hang out.”
Namal: “Barefoot is really fun! At first I thought I wasn’t gonna like it, but I love it so much.”
Isaiah | Detroit, MI | Counselor
What has been one of your favorite moments from this week so far?
“Seeing my guys all take leadership positions, individually and collectively. It’s just been a sight to see since day 1. Now we’re in Friday, which is day 5. Just seeing them grow up and grow as a team, just love on one another, call each other out, hold each other accountable- has been really good.”
What has God been teaching you this week?
“Personally, God has just rocked me on being selfless. We had a camper who really wanted to do basketball- part of our Iron Man competition- but he ended up trading it off to somebody who wanted to do it more and he said ‘you know what, I’ll start off the race.’ He started off the race and he ended up getting injured and having to go to the hospital. It’s been really good just seeing him be willing to give up something that he really wanted to do. It helped me see in my life many things- desires I have, things I want to do, and sometimes it can upstage me being a team player. I learned that it’s all about team.”
Bailey | Spring Hill, TN | Office Intern
What has been your favorite moment from this week?
“Watching all the campers while someone’s giving their testimony at evening program. They all listen really intently, like when they’re all praying for them. It’s really incredible.”
What is your favorite thing about working with kids?
“I love seeing the changes in them. I don’t work with them as much because I’m in the office, but even watching them at evening program is good. They all grow.”
What is God teaching you through being on staff at Barefoot?
“That I need to be flexible and have a lot of patience. It’s really easy for things not to go the way we think they will, but God’s in control and we have to remember that.”
What makes Barefoot stand out?
“The fact that their mission is about diversity. You don’t see a lot of camps that try and plug that into what they stand for. It’s really cool- for Barefoot to not only say that they’re going to do that, but to act on it.”
-Day 6-
This week has been truly incredible! This morning, the campers showcased what they learned in their specialty classes this week. Many parents and siblings were in the audience to see their campers performed. Stomp, dance, making of the band, drama, and vocal performance performed at the amphitheater. Photography, film, and visual arts showcased their projects inside the D.C. afterwards. Weekly awards were given out to outstanding students including the Barefoot award (for the male and female campers that best exemplified the mission of Barefoot Republic Camp this week). Several of the campers participated in “cardboard testimonies.” They wrote how they felt at the beginning of the week on one side of a piece of cardboard and how they felt at the end of the week on the other. Campers went from “lost” to “found,” “no friends” to “lots of friends,” “nervous” to “happy”, and “shy” to “confident.” It has been encouraging to see the transformation and growth in these campers this week! We hope to see many familiar faces next summer!
